When you’re thinking about updating the lighting in your home, you probably have several questions floating around inside your head. Questions such as, “what style of fixtures do I want?” or “where do I need more lighting?” are perhaps the most common, and while good, they may not be the most important. At Hacienda Lighting in Scottsdale, we love meeting with homeowners who want to add modern lighting to their properties, and in this post, we’ll look at some ideal questions to ask when renovating your home.
1. Can I Add More Layers of Lighting?
We’ve covered the three basic layers of lighting before – ambient (general), accent, and task – and the roles they play in each room. If you’re looking at your living room or your master bedroom and you can see that you have good ambient and accent lighting, but not enough task lighting, you may want to focus on that layer. If your dining room has an alcove or a tray ceiling, it could benefit from the addition of some recessed fixtures. Taking the time to go through each room and assess each lighting layer can provide you with some fantastic inspiration for where to add new fixtures.
2. Do I Have Control Over My Lighting?
While this question may seem a little strange, since you know that you can turn the lights on and off with the flip of the switch, there’s more to it than that. We’ve written before about dimmer controls, but when you’re thinking about adding new lighting, it’s important to also think about where you can add dimming switches. You might not like how bright the light in dining room is, and while you can switch out the bulbs, it can actually be more economical to add a dimmer switch. You can create the perfect ambiance in any room by putting overhead lighting, lamps, and sconces on dimming controls.
3. Do I Have Lighting in Unconventional Areas?
Once you’ve decided how you can update your ambient, accent, and task lighting layers, and you’ve decided how you can better control your light, turn your attention to those unconventional spots that could benefit from new lighting. If you have a kitchen island, consider adding LED lighting to the bottom to provide a unique accent. If you have accent or textured walls in the living room, think about adding vertical lighting in the corners.
There are of course many other questions you can ask when it comes to updating your home’s lighting design. These three, however, are important because they make you think differently about how you approach your renovations. It can be easy to walk into a showroom, pick out some fixtures, and have an electrician install them, but when you begin thinking outside the box, that’s when your home truly transforms into something special.
