When buying a new home, you take the time to look at the walls, the floors, and the ceilings, thinking about how you could fill the space and how you and your family could live in the house. You also inspect the outside, making sure the foundation is level and that there are no problems with the roof. Before closing, it’s important to make sure the property is in good condition, and while the official inspection will alert you to any problems, it’s a good idea to check a few extra things yourself while doing the walkthrough with the current owners.
Lighting is one of the most important aspects of any home, and if there are problems with the lights, you’ll want to be sure those issues are addressed before you close. At Hacienda Lighting in Scottsdale, we want every homeowner to have the lights they need, so if you’re replacing lights in a house you’ve just purchased, or you need to make some upgrades before you sell your current property, we’ll be here to help!
Check the Switches
While you may feel a little strange doing this (at least at first), it’s a good idea to check each light switch as you walk through the house. Which fixture does the switch turn on? Is there a delay between when you flip the switch and when the light comes on? Are the plates loose and has the homeowner had any issues with the switches? Knowing how to control each light will give you a better idea of the home’s overall lighting plan, and you’ll know what needs to be replaced before you move in.
Check the Electrical Panel
There are countless feet of wires inside a house, and they all run to one place – the electrical panel. When looking at a house, be sure to open the electrical panel to see what condition it’s in. Is it outdated? Are all the labels easy to read? Are there wires that don’t seem to be connected to anything? The last thing you want after moving in is to blow a fuse and not know which breaker needs to be reset. If the panel is old and perhaps poses a risk, have it replaced with a modern option so that you can rest easy at night once you move in.
Update the Fixtures
While this step mostly comes after you move in, it’s still a good idea to update any fixtures that are broken or outdated. Any broken lights will need to be taken care of by the current owners, but if the fixtures simply don’t fit with your personal tastes, you’ll have to update them after you move in. You may have something in mind for each room, such as replacing that old globe light in the bathroom with a mini chandelier, and if that’s the case, Hacienda is here to help. We have a great selection of fixtures for every room, and we love helping people find the perfect lights for a particular space.
If you’re looking for a new home, and you’ve found one that fits your wants and needs, make sure you check the lighting in each room. If the switches don’t work, make sure they’re fixed, and if you want to update them, we can provide a number of plate and sensor options. If the electrical panel is outdated, have it replaced, and if the fixtures seem too vintage, find new options in our showroom. It will take some time, but once everything is replaced and updated, you’ll have a home that’s properly lit and that you love spending time in.
