The dining room can be a unique space within a home. You use it for dining, bookkeeping, and other various purposes, which is why it’s important for it to have the perfect lighting. At Hacienda in Scottsdale, we can help you find new dining room lighting, including chandeliers, wall sconces, and much more. We can help you create a beautiful space that is ideal for hosting friends and relatives, as well as the perfect setting for weekly family dinners.
The Dining Room Chandelier
Every dining room lighting design begins with the central fixture. In most cases, this fixture is a chandelier, but it can also be a flush mount light or pendant, depending on the height of your ceiling. However, since the chandelier is often the most popular choice, we’ll use it as the example for your central ambient fixture in the dining room.
There are a number of chandelier styles to choose from, but what’s most important is finding one that fits the space and suits your tastes. It’s not very likely that you’ll replace the chandelier again any time soon, so it’s imperative to find one that you enjoy using and looking at for years to come. Our team can show you what we have in stock in our showroom, and you can also look through our online catalog for amazing chandelier options.
Sizing the Chandelier
The dimensions of your dining room will determine what size of chandelier you can have. If the room is 8’ x 8’, then you’ll probably want a fixture that’s approximately 15” to 20” wide. You don’t want the chandelier to feel too big or too small within the space, and we can help you find the right fixture size. You’ll want to measure your dining room’s width and length, and have those measurements ready when you start shopping for new lights.
The size and shape of your dining room table will also play a part in the type of chandelier you choose. If you have a round dining table, then a round chandelier is probably a better option. For long dining tables with chairs placed on each side and at each end, it can be better to have a linear chandelier that casts light along the length of the table.
Ultimately, you want a light fixture that feels right within the dining room. If the chandelier is too close to the walls, it can make the room feel crowded and less inviting. It can also make the room too bright, which isn’t always the right ambience for dining and entertaining.
Installing the Chandelier
Once you’ve chosen the size and shape of chandelier that works for your dining room, you’ll want to think about how you’ll install it. The height of the ceiling will determine how far down the fixture will hang, but you’ll want to make sure that the bottom of the chandelier is at least 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. Any lower, and the light begins to obstruct a person’s line of sight when they’re seated at the table.
If the dining room ceiling is higher than 8 feet, or you have vaulted ceilings, then you can raise the chandelier up so it doesn’t hang too low within the space. For every foot of ceiling height, you can raise the chandelier 3 inches, keeping it centered above the table. This means that if you have a 10-foot ceiling, the light can be 39 to 42 inches above the table. Again, what’s most important is that the chandelier looks right within the space and there’s no chance of anyone bumping into it as they sit down at the table.
Wall Sconces and Accent Lighting
No dining room is complete without accent lighting. Wall sconces are a great choice for accent fixtures, as they don’t take up too much space, and they provide lighting for the middle layer of the room. Well-placed sconces can make the room more intimate and inviting, creating the perfect atmosphere for weekend dinner parties.
When choosing your sconces, it’s important to make sure they complement your chandelier. You can choose fixtures of the same style as the chandelier, or you can opt for sconces with similar design touches or finishes. You don’t want the sconces to clash with the central fixture, creating disharmony in a room that’s meant to be charming and welcoming.
As for installing your new wall sconces, make sure to keep in mind the width of the dining room, as well as the width of the dining room table. If there’s a chance that people may bump into the sconces when they’re trying to sit down, then you might want to install the accent lights in the corner of the room. That way you still have ample accent light without the risk of people running into the fixtures!
Track lighting is also a viable option for accent illumination, especially if you have artwork on display in the dining room. Track and rail fixtures can be installed on the ceiling and directed to shine on a painting or a photograph, but just make sure there’s enough room next to the chandelier. If you don’t want to break up the clean lines of the walls and ceiling with track fixtures, we can help you find other ways of highlighting your dining room decor and artwork.
Once you’ve chosen your ambient and accent light fixtures for the dining room, you’ll need to think about what type of lighting controls you’ll need. Switches for the chandelier and sconces are a must, but you might also want to look into adding dimmers for your fixtures. Dimmer switches will allow you to set the lights where you want for intimate dinner parties, family gatherings, and other special occasions. By having more precise control over your lighting, your dining room can become more versatile!
Another option to consider is smart lighting. New technology has paved the way for smart controls that allow you to program “themes” for your dining room lighting. You can create a “dinner party” theme that lowers the lights to the perfect level, or you can set a “homework” theme that brings the lights up to the optimal level for reading textbooks and completing assignments.
